Vitamin D May Promote Weight Loss in Obese Children

by March 27, 2020

According to research presented at the 57th Annual Society for Pediatric Endocrinology Meeting, vitamin D supplements may promote weight loss and reduce risk factors for future heart and metabolic diseases in overweight and obese children. These findings indicate that simple vitamin D supplementation may be an effective strategy to tackle childhood obesity and reduce the risk of serious heart and blood sugar issues like adult-onset diabetes.
The most important finding of this study is that simple vitamin D supplementation may reduce the risk of obesity including reducing the risk of heart disease and adult-onset diabetes in later life.
Although vitamin D deficiency is typically associated with impaired bone health, in recent years it has been increasingly linked to increased body fat accumulation and obesity. In this study, Dr. Christos Giannios and Dr. Evangelia Charmandari assessed 232 obese children and adolescents over 12 months with 117 randomly assigned to receive vitamin D supplementation, in accordance with the Endocrine Society’s guidelines. Levels of vitamin D, body fat and blood markers of liver function and heart health were assessed at the start of the study and 12 months. The study reported that children given D supplements had significantly lower body fat and significant improved cholesterol levels after 12 months. I use an emulsified form of vitamin D in my practice for my patients. My recommended dose is the following
– Adults need 4000 iu a day
– Infants need 1000 iu
– Children need 200 iu a day
It is important to discuss with your primary care physician for more advice.

Probiotics Plus Melatonin

by March 27, 2020

Clinically tested and doctor-formulated, a unique vegetarian and non-GMO probiotic with a drug-free, non-habit forming 7-hour sustained-release melatonin for supporting Gut Health and a Great Night Sleep.
Did you know that within your intestines, or “gut”, trillions of health-promoting “good” bacteria are working hard to keep you healthy? These “friendly” bacteria are essential for digestion and nutrient absorption.
The majority of probiotics currently available are non-spores, such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Probiotic plus Melatonin was formulated with an active spore known as DE 111, Bacillus Subtilis. This probiotic has the ability to form endospores to protect themselves in the acidic environment of the stomach, allowing for optimal germination in the gastrointestinal tract.
Additional benefits include:

  • Communication with the intestinal cells to maintain gut barrier function, supporting “Healthy Gut Healthy Mind”.
  • Supports healthy immune, digestive, and urinary tract function
  • Remains viable under a wide temperature range, does not require refrigeration

What makes Probiotic plus Melatonin a revolutionary product for today’s need is the MicroActive® Melatonin, 7-hour sustained-release melatonin. Ordinary melatonin supplements leave the body after four hours, so they may aid in falling asleep, but they are not effective for those who have difficulty staying asleep. Microactive® Melatonin was developed through a micronized, sustained-release technology that ensures that the melatonin is gradually released over 7 hours. This sustained-release technology allows a consistent dose over a long period of time in order to support a full night sleep. This scientifically formulated combination of DE 111 probiotic with MicroActive® Melatonin promotes Optimal Wellness while you sleep. “Take One Capsule at Night and We’ll Do the Rest.”

Omega 3 & PAD

by March 27, 2020

New research shows that people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) could have lower Omega 3 levels in their red blood cells than people without the disease. PAD affects over 8.5 million Americans and more than 200 million who are in the early stages of developing it later in their lives. It is a common circulatory problem that leads to narrowed arteries in the extremities and insufficient blood flow to keep up with the demand. It damages the arteries in the same way that heart disease normally does. The process is called atherosclerosis. Evidence from multiple studies shows that Omega-3’s improve cardiovascular health. These studies show that Omega3’s improve the lining of the blood vessels, delay the development of plaque, as well as exerting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic actions. In the latest study, the red blood cells’ fatty acid content of 145 patients with PAD and 34 people without the disease was analyzed. The ratio of Omega-3‘s to Omega – 6 was also compared. The results showed that PAD sufferers had low average Omega-3 levels. In fact, just a 1% decrease in Omega-3’s was associated with a 39% increase in PAD risk. I prescribe all my patients to take at least 4 grams of Omega-3’s. I formulated Dr. Qutab’s Pure Omega-3 which has the right amount of EPA & DHA which scientific studies show can be beneficial to cardiovascular health. It is currently available on Amazon Prime.

Nitric Oxide & Your Health

by March 27, 2020

Nitric Oxide is one of the most remarkable molecules in all of nature. Searching the PubMed database results in more than 160,000 Nitric Oxide research articles, and we have only been studying it for 30 years. Here are a few of the most important health benefits of Nitric Oxide :

  • The Nitric Oxide produced by nerves helps one nerve communicate with another or with cells in the brain.
  • Production of Nitric Oxide helps support healthy Thyroid function to promote a healthy metabolism.
  • It is necessary for the regulation of blood flow through the circulatory system. By supporting healthy blood flow, Nitric Oxide brings more oxygen and nutrients to cells in the body. It also inhibits blood clots and supports healthy sexual function.
  • Nitric Oxide produced by certain bone cells called osteocytes improves bone mineralization and prevents osteoporosis.
  • For those who exercise, Nitric Oxide helps to reduce acidosis caused by exercise. It also builds muscle strength by increasing the blood supply to the muscles.
  • Nitric Oxide supports healthy immune function by creating an environment in which viruses have more difficulty multiplying.

To help my patients with healthy aging I created a formula, Nitro Max. It has been formulated based on Nobel Prize-winning research and helps your body to produce more Nitric Oxide for Healthy Aging.

Diet and Depression

by February 22, 2019

We seem pretty clear on the idea that diet can prevent certain diseases, like heart disease and diabetes. Diet can also effect the brain. It can influence mood and cognition. A diet that is high in refined carbohydrates, for example, can create insulin insensitivity. Insulin insensitivity can make a person prone to mood swings or depression.

There have been a number of studies that have looked at the relationship between diet and mental health. A study appearing in the Archives of General Psychiatry (2009; 66(10): 1090-8) found that diet can affect the incidence of depression. The study followed the dietary habits of 10,094 subjects for 4.4 years. During the course of the study, 480 were diagnosed with depression. According to the study, the subjects adhering to the Mediterranean diet had a lower incidence of depression. The Mediterranean diet consists of high consumption of fruits, vegetables and nuts. It also recommends a high amount of monounsaturated oil (olive oil), and low saturated fat consumption, along with low amounts of high-fat meat and dairy, and high amounts of fish and legumes.

Various vitamin deficiencies can lead to depression. A number of studies show the value of omega-3 fatty acids for patients with depression. One such study was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry (2006; 188: 46-50 ). It was a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 75 individuals with bipolar depression, adjunctive treatment with ethyl-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was found to be well-tolerated and effective in reducing symptoms of depression. In Acta Psychiatry Scandinavia (2006; 113(1): 31-5 ) , a study demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation helped with post-partum depression. Another study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry (2006; 163(6): 1098-100 ), found that omega-3 supplementation was beneficial to children suffering with depressio
